Elements & Elementals I have read in so many bigoted books that the ancients, in their ignorance, believed there were only four elements (actually they believed in five but more of that later) while modern knowledgeable scientists have mapped out a whole periodic table of the things. The confusion arises because modern scientists are talking about the Physical Elements, while the ancients were talking about the five Metaphysical Elements: Earth - Fire - Air - Water - Spirit. There is nothing unscientific about this belief. Indeed it is a very useful way of classifying basic energy types.

The five elements are conditions in which energy may exist and manifest. The first four (Earth - Fire - Air - Water) are energy manifesting as matter. The final and purest element, Spirit, is pure energy.

Albert Einstein taught that all matter and energy are theoretically interchangeable according the the equation E=mc2 (where E is energy, M is matter and C is a constant). This idea is very important to the occultist who knows that all matter is just energy and thus able to be manipulated by the energy of thought.

Each of the first four elements combine two of the four primary qualities belonging to all matter: Hot - Cold - Wet - Dry. Earth is cold & dry. Fire is hot & dry. Air is hot & wet (or at least humid). While water is cold and wet. If one of these qualities changes, the element is changed into a different one. When water is heated it becomes steam - a gas - the element of air. When fire cools it becomes ash, the element of earth.

Each elements is a manifestation of one of the Universal Forces. Elementals are very basic forms of spiritual life, often called Earth Spirits. The elementals of Earth are called gnomes. Those of Water are undines. The spirits of Air are called sylphs and those of Fire are salamanders.

Apart from these four there are also many other types. Elementals are streams of life. They are often believed to be below us on the scale of spiritual evolution. From time to time an elemental may become detached from the stream and assume a temporary independence. Any intelligence they may have is dedicated entirely to the form of energy they represent.

CORRESPONDENCES Some people think of magic and the occult as primitive science, yet it is much closer to poetry. Magic is more emotional and spiritual than it is intellectual. The deeper levels of the human mind tend to link things together artistically and emotionally rather than logically. This is especially true in primitive societies and in children, who have never been taught to think differently. The poetic way of thinking is our natural, primitive and very magical way of thinking. It comes not from our modern educated levels of consciousness but from the old brain mentioned in Monograph One. Because we have been through the western education system we need to relearn these older ways of thinking. Wicca is a special form of natural magic, using sexual, as well as psychic energy.

Imitative magic depends on analogy. It makes use of a wide range of associations and correspondences. Mundane examples are things reversed or upside down being destructive rather than constructive. This is why Satanists use inverted pentagrams and crucifixes. The idea is that if two things are connected in the human mind, then as the human mind is a tiny part of the universal mind, these things must actually be connected and this connection can be used to control them. Correspondences help us to forge a link between our own minds and the corresponding aspect of the Universal Mind. The more correspondences we can work into our rituals and spells the stronger the magic.

The system of occult correspondences is very complex. In this monograph I have included the bits you are likely to need in order to design and
perform basic rituals and spells. When new students see these tables they tend to ask “what use is it”? This is not an easy question to answer. It all depends on your own interests and what kind of rituals you intend doing. Much of it is more generally occult than strictly Pagan. Some is rooted in the Tarot and the Jewish Cabala. Yet it is extremely practical and some Witches consider it essential. For instance, if you intend doing a bit of candle magic you can look up the key words, say for instance “Wealth” and know you will need a dark green candle. You will see that the planetary sigil to inscribe on the candle is that of Uranus and that the candle should be placed in the north.

In some cases the tables may appear to contradict each other. When this happens just follow your own gut feelings. If in doubt Witches rent to follow the elemental correspondences in preference to planetary ones.

When you start doing more advanced rituals you may wish to invoke the archangels or the elementary kings. In later monographs you will be given a few such rituals and they are very powerful indeed. Although these tables are primarily for reference purposes, please do try to memorise as much of the information in this monograph as you can. Even if it all seams a bit strange at the moment it will be of considerable benefit to you later on.
